Terminology Committee

keywords : Terminology

This committee plans to develop vocabulary management tools to help the project’s researchers and professional community understand the multiple utilizations of the terms encountered. The tools created will complement those that already exist, including Categories for the Description of Works of Art (CDWA), Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) and the Dictionnaire des arts médiatiques produced by the Groupe de recherche en arts médiatiques (GRAM) at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM). The new tools will also take into account those available on media art project Web sites.

The procedure proposed by the Terminology Research Committee is to select pertinent terms and offer various interpretations, in English and French, of the data associated with each term through tools such as a glossary, thesaurus and ontology. For each term, the committee will provide the definitions found in the documents consulted, the date the term was used in each definition, and the positioning of the term within a semantic network as expressed through thesaurus and ontology structures. The committee also proposes to recommend the single definition most closely aligned to the DOCAM project from among all of the definitions available for each term.

These tools will allow the technology cataloguing and framework tool to be created. The ontology will also permit interoperability strategies to be developed to link the data generated by DOCAM to other data collections.
